This drive offered up beautiful views and historic sites.

"The Elijah Oliver Place had a "stranger room" added to the front porch to accommodate overnight visitors." I suppose a forerunner of what we would call a "guest room".

"And it was the custom of some families in the Cove to have a "weaner cabin" on the farm.

A son would marry and bring his bride to the weaner cabin. They were far enough from his family for privacy and some degree of independence, yet close enough to help and be helped.

In the time and place of these families, more buildings were required for living than now. They needed the springhouse, and the smokehouse, the corn crib, a barn, and some large farms had their own blacksmith shops."

And they built churches.

A Baptist and Methodist.

"Methodists were not as numerous as Baptists in the Cove, but enough of them got together in the 1820's to build a log building that lasted until this one replaced it in 1902.

Notice that the church has two front doors. This usually indicates the church follows the custom of men sitting on one side of the house and women on the other. But this church didn't follow that custom. The two doors are there because the church borrowed the building plans of another church that did divide its congregation by gender." : )
