PRESIDENTS DAY

"Government is not reason, it is not eloquent; it is a force..
Like fire, it is a dangerous servant, and a fearful master."
George Washington

"The important thing today is not what we say of Lincoln, but what Lincoln would say of us if he were here and could note the drift and tendency in American life and American politics."

A PRAYER FROM GRANDMOTHER HOLMES

O Lord, grant that each one that has to do with me today may be happier for it.
Let it be given me each hour today what I shall say, and grant me the wisdom of a loving heart, that I may say the right thing rightly.
Help me to enter into the mind of everyone who talks with me, and keep me alive to the feelings of each one present.
Give me a quick eye for little kindnesses, that I may be ready in doing them, and gracious in receiving them.
Give me time for the needs of others, and love enough to help them. Amen

I think this day I will make Grandmother's prayer my own.

THE PATH TO FORGIVENESS

O, man forgive thy mortal foe,
Nor ever strike him blow for blow.
For all the souls on earth that live,
To be forgiven, must forgive.

MORE MEMEORIES FROM GRANDMOTHER HOLMES

THE LITTLE BLACK DOG

I wonder if Christ had a little black dog,
All curly and woolly like mine?
With two silly ears - and a nose round and wet.
And two eyes brown and tender that shine.

I am sure if he had, that that little black dog
Knew right from the start he was God.
That he needed no proof that Christ was divine,
And just worshipped the ground that he trod!

I'm afraid that he hadn't, because I have read,
How he prayed in the garden alone,
For all of his friends and disciples had fled,
Even Peter, the one called a stone.

And, oh, I am sure that that little black dog,
With a heart so tender and warm,
Would never have left him to suffer alone,
But creeping right under his arm,

Would have licked those dear fingers,
In agony clasped, and counting all favors but loss,
When they took him away, would have trotted behind
And followed him quite to the cross.

SMART THINKING

"To confess you were wrong yesterday, is only to acknowledge that you are a little wiser today."

A PRAYER FOR THOSE WHO LIVE ALONE

From Grandmother's notebook:

I live alone, dear Lord,
Stay by my side,
In all my daily needs,
Please be my guide.

Grant me good health
For that indeed I pray,
To carry on my work
From day to day.

Keep pure my mind,
My thought, my every deed,
Let me be kind, unselfish
In my neighbor's need.

Spare me from fire,
From flood, malicious tongue,
From thieves, from fear and evil ones.

If sickness or an accident befall,
Then humbly, Lord I pray,
Please hear my call.

And when I'm feeling low,
Or in despair,
Lift up my heart
And help me in my prayers.

I live alone, dear Lord,
Yet have no fear,
Because I feel your presence
Ever near.

With each passing year, I appreciate more and more the prayers and longings of Grandmother's heart.

A PRAYER FOR LENT

Dear Heavenly Father,
We pray that all that we do this day and during this season of Lent be inspired by You.
Help us to reaffirm our faith, and purify our hearts.
Allow us to remember Your promise of forgiveness, redemption and salvation, as we pray for ourselves and others.
Forgive us our sins and bless us so that, even as we dwell in darkness, we may reach out and find the Truth in your light. Amen

WORTH REMEMBERING

LET THE PERFECT THROW THE STONE

By Mrs. Ethel Meadows

If there's one who often falters
By the wayside in despair,
Seems unusual his short-comings,
Do you hold him up in prayer?

If the weak should stumble, brethren,
If he cannot stand alone;
Let the perfect one among you
Be the first to throw a stone.

If so often he has wavered
That you can't believe him true,
Have you mentioned it to Jesus
As the strong one ought to do?

Do you ever stop, consider
Have you no faults of your own?
Let the perfect one among you
Be the first to throw a stone.

Is there one with cross so heavy
Seems he cannot carry all,
He may not keep step as you do,
If he even chance to fall;
Do you plead with God for mercy
Till He answers from the Throne,

Let the perfect one among you
Be the first to throw a stone.
