HONOR AND DISHONOR

On April 9th, 1865, Lee surrended to Grant. Once again, we can "only imagine" the emotions of the beleagured president on hearing this long-awaited news.

Even as the end of this bloody coflict is being celebrated, we view a menacing John Wilkes Booth with unthinkable plans in the making.

Six days later Abraham Lincoln was dead.

Mary Todd Lincoln has been quoted as saying, "The last day he lived was the happiest of his life."

"Fellow-citizens, we cannot escape history. We of this Congress and this administration, will be remembered in spite of ourselves. No personal significance, or insignificance, can spare one or another of us. The fierty trial through which we pass, will light us down, in honor or dishonor, to the latest generation." December 1, 1862 Messsage to Congress
